The First Window: The Annunciation


Reading: Luke 1 26-28

“In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you…””

Position: (Facing altar) this window is the closest to the altar on the left side

Description: In this image the Archangel Gabriel is announcing to Mary that she will be pregnant with Jesus if she agrees. The Dove in the top left hand corner symbolizes the Holy Spirit which is coming down upon Mary. The Archangel is showing a hand of blessing, and is holding a staff to show that he comes by the command of God. The hand of blessing signifies the Trinity.

The Second Window: The Visitation

Reading: Luke 1 42 

“…cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb…”

Position: (Facing the Altar) this window is the middle window on the left side. 

Description: In this window Mary is visiting her cousin Elizabeth who is pregnant with John the Baptist. Mary is the one standing up with the pack at her side. Elizabeth is the one knelling and Zachariah is standing with Elizabeth in front of him.

The Third Window: The Nativity

Reading: Luke 2 14 

“…Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Position: (Facing Altar) this window is the closest to the entrance on the left side. 

Description: In this Image Jesus is being born. Mary is holding baby Jesus, Joseph is standing looking at him, and the star is shining down on him. The Shepherds aren’t present because this was the moment of the Birth of Christ, but they came later. Joseph is holding a lantern to signify that is was dark. The lantern can also signify that Jesus is the new light of the world

The Fourth Window: The Presentation

Reading: Luke 2 27 

“…He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him …”

Position: (Facing Altar) this window is the closest to the entrance on the right side. 

Description: In this window Jesus is being presented in the temple. Joseph is holding two sacrificial turtledoves which signifies that they are poor (Luke 2 24). Simeon is there because he was promised the sight of the Christ before he died. (Luke II 29-32). There is a Purification altar in the middle of the picture because of the Jewish purification laws (which can be found in Deuteronomy) The Roman Numerals on the purification altar represent the Ten Commandments.

The Fifth Window: The Finding of Jesus in The Temple

Reading: Luke 2 47 
“… and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers…”

Position: (Facing Altar) this window is the middle window on the left side. 

Description: In this window Jesus is found by Mary and Joseph in the temple in the middle of teachers. The person behind Jesus is a random teacher.

The Sixth Window: The Coronation

Reading: Luke 1 32 

“He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father”

Position: (Facing altar) this window is the closest to the altar on the right side 

Description: In this window Jesus is crowning His mother Mary. Jesus is holding a Scepter to show authority. The reading connects to the image because Jesus is lifting the lowly handmaid Mary. Which is a reference to the Magnificat.
